Xiaomi heads to the top of the electric car market

– The first steps in mobility it was made through electric scooters. But today Xiaomi, the Chinese electronics company famous especially in the mobile sector, takes the next step. A large next step. These days the company officially debuted in the electric car industry by presenting the Xiaomi EV, the new unit that aims to redefine automotive technology. How? Through five basic technologies – engine, batteries, autonomous driving, die casting, and intelligent cockpit – and efforts focused on independent research. According to the company, the R&D sector of Xiaomi EV has more than 3,400 engineers and more than a thousand technical experts and has an initial investment of 70 million dollars.

Xiaomi’s entry into the automotive industry is a new beginning,” said Lei Jun, founder, president and CEO of Xiaomi Group. “I believe that one day Xiaomi electric vehicles will be a familiar mink on the roads around the world” […] We decided to invest ten times as much, starting from the development of fundamental basic technologies, committing ourselves to building an exceptional vehicle. Through 15-20 years of efforts, we aim to become one of the top five car manufacturers in the world“.

Xiaomi Su7, the electric sedan

And the first product, the result of the new commitment to electromobility, was “pre-launched” on the same occasion. Let’s talk about Xiaomi SU7, a high-performance electric sedan that contains all the results already achieved by the research and development team. Equipped with an independently developed electric motor (HyperEngine), an integrated 150 kWh CTB battery and a series of technological innovations the vehicle can accelerate from zero to 100 in just 2.78 seconds and can reach a top speed of 265 km/h.

In detail, the HyperEngine V6/V6s electric motors developed by the company boast an industry-leading rotational speed of 21,000 rev/min, surpassing the most powerful electric motor mass-produced globally. They have a maximum power of 299 hp and 374 hp respectively. But the company is already working on the next generation, the HyperEngine V8 to ensure a top speed of 27,200 rpm. The model will be mass-produced and implemented in Xiaomi electric vehicles from 2025.

In terms of autonomous driving, the company can rely on its Adaptive BEV technology which employs different perception algorithms according to the scenario (recognition radius from 5 cm to 250 m), and on the Super-Res Occupancy Network, obstacle recognition technology.

The flagship? Xiaomi EV Smart Cabin. The cockpit adopts a “human-centered” interaction architecture that delivers an interactive tablet-like experience. In other words, the company explains, it allows users to adapt quickly without the need for a learning curve.
